Weekly Skills
Sept. 5th PLACE VALUE
We have started with place value from one to a million. The students should understand the different values, the three forms of a number and how to convert one into the other.
Sept. 12th PLACE VALUE
The students should be able to name and compare numbers as large as ten million (10,000,000) to as small as one thousandths (0.001). In addition, students are learning to view the numbers in various forms (standard, expanded, written, fraction).
Sept. 19th FACTORS
We are now moving onto factors, prime numbers, exponents and multiplying of whole numbers. I will be teaching a variety of techniques to multiply and then letting the students pick the method they feel most comfortable with.
Sept. 26th PRIME FACTORIZATION
In class we have covered prime factorization, exponents, and multiplying by the powers of 10 (10, 100, 1000, 10000, ....)

Unit 1: Number, Estimation, & Computation
Common Core Standards
5.NBT.1 Recognize that in a multi-digit number, a digit in one place represents 10 times as much as it represents in the place to its right and 1/10 of what it represents in the place to its left. 5.NBT.2 Explain patterns in the number of zeros of the product when multiplying a number by powers of 10, and explain patterns in the placement of the decimal point when a decimal is multiplied or divided by a power of 10. Use whole-number exponents to denote powers of 10. 5.NBT.3 Read, write, and compare decimals to thousandths: Read and write decimals to thousandths using base-ten numerals, number names, and expanded form. Compare two decimals to thousandths based on meanings of the digits in each place, using >, =, and < symbols to record the results of comparisons. Reading & Writing Decimals Tutorial 5.NBT.4 Use place value understanding to round decimals to any place. 5.MD.1 Convert among different-sized standard measurement units within a given measurement system (convert 5 cm to 0.05 m), and use these conversions in solving multi-step, real world problems. 5.NF.4 Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication to multiply a fraction or whole number by a [decimal] fraction. 5.NF.B.5. Interpret multiplication as scaling (resizing), by comparing the size of a product to the size of one factor on the basis of the size of the other factor without performing th indicated multiplication. |
Instructional Resources
Place Value Pirates Students identify the given place value of a number to the thousandths to find the pirate’s buried treasure. Numbers get progressively more difficult as student’s correctly identify the given place value. Multiplication Practice This site gives students practice multiplying one-digit numbers by two-digit numbers and two-digit numbers by two-digit numbers. Compare Numbers to the Billions Students are given a scenario in which they have to look at a set of data and choose the one that meets the criteria of the question. **Only a limited amount of resources are free** Multiplication Patterns Students practice multiplication patterns over increasing place values. Estimating Products Students are given a story problem and use estimation skills to choose the closest product. Estimate the Product of Decimals Round each number to its greatest place value, then multiply. Multiply a Decimal by a Power of Ten Students do mental computation to determine the correct answer to a two or three digit multiplication problem that includes decimals. **Only a limited amount of IXL resources are free** |
